Premier Miton European Opportunities

This fund was previously called LF Miton European Opportunities.

Introduction to the fund

This is a multi-cap fund with a strong bias towards mid-cap growth companies. The portfolio is concentrated at 40-55 stocks, with each position limited to 4% for risk purposes. Carlos and Tom look for quality companies, which they define through having competitive advantages such as a leading product or strong brand. These firms will be in control of their own destiny rather than being reliant on the wider economic background. This allows them to grow revenues ahead of their peers, generating better profit margins and producing higher returns on capital. The fund has a heavy style bias towards growth and mid-caps and investors should be aware that the fund may underperform when this is not in favour.

Fund manager

Carlos Moreno, Thomas Brown

Carlos is head of European equities at Premier Miton, having joined in August 2015 from JOHCM. He has also had fund manager roles at Thames River CM and at Fidelity where he started his career. Carlos has degrees from the University of Cambridge in Engineering Design, Manufacturer and Management and from the University of Exeter in Mechanical Engineering.

Thomas Brown worked with Carlos at Thames River, before joining Mitsubishi UFJ Asset Management. Prior to this he was an assistant fund manager at the British Steel pension fund. He joined Premier Miton in November 2015 soon after Carlos.

Opinion on fund

Premier Miton European Opportunities is genuinely differentiated to many peers, with a willingness from the managers to look at company prospects in isolation, rather than within the context of wider market narratives. This allows them to have longer time horizons, supporting an open and flexible style. That being said, the managers do consider style risks at a portfolio level. This, combined with the multi-cap approach, are good ingredients for strong long-term outperformance.
