Your money and mental health

Signs you might need some extra support

Money problems and mental health problems can go hand-in-hand. When it comes to managing your finances, breaking things down into smaller steps can make it feel less overwhelming.

Signs you might need some extra support:

  • Avoidance – you have stopped opening bills or checking your bank balance
  • Not sleeping
  • Feeling low and anxious – feeling like there is no way forward due to your financial situation
  • Impact on relationships – the money issues are affecting your social life, making you feel lonely and isolated
  • Guilt – you feel guilty about spending money or ashamed to ask for help
  • Overspending – you find it difficult to not overspend, or buy things you don’t need

Speaking to a health professional about your mental health is incredibly important. This could be anything from speaking to your GP, or calling a helpline.

Helplines

NHS 111 now offers a mental health line

Samaritans: 116 123 – supporting people in emotional distress or struggling to cope

Mind: 0300 123 3393 – information and advice for people with mental health problems

StepChange: 0330 912 0114 – help for those struggling to pay debts

Take back control

There are also things that you can do to get control:

  1. Budget – compare your ingoings and outgoings to see where you can cut costs
  2. Shop around – everything from utilities to insurance, phones and groceries can help you save without making sacrifices
  3. Get organised – put all of your documentation in one place, so that they are easy to find and review
  4. Check your bank balance – do this at regular intervals, so you know what you have left to spend
  5. Make managing your money part of your routine
  6. Set up regular payments – direct debits and standing orders can ensure that you don’t forget or overspend
  7. A rainy day fund – set aside an emergency savings net. Good practise would be three to six months worth of essential expenses (e.g: rent/mortgage, food, bills)
